ICANN Approves Historic Change to Internets Domain Name System

ICANNs Board of Directors has approved a plan to usher in one of the biggest changes ever to the Internets Domain Name System.


During a special meeting, the Board approved a plan to allow an increase in the number of Internet address endings - called generic top-level domains (gTLDs) - from the current 22, which includes such familiar domains as .com, .org and .net.


ICANN has opened the Internets naming system to unleash the global human imagination. Todays decision respects the rights of groups to create new Top Level Domains in any language or script. We hope this allows the domain name system to better serve all of mankind, said Rod Beckstrom, President and Chief Executive Officer of ICANN.


New gTLDs will change the way people find information on the Internet and how businesses plan and structure their online presence. Virtually every organization with an online presence could be affected in some way.


Internet address names will be able to end with almost any word in any language, offering organizations around the world the opportunity to market their brand, products, community or cause in new and innovative ways.


Todays decision will usher in a new Internet age, said Peter Dengate Thrush, Chairman of ICANNs Board of Directors. We have provided a platform for the next generation of creativity and inspiration.


The decision to proceed with the gTLD program follows many years of discussion, debate and deliberation with the Internet community, business groups and governments. Strong efforts were made to address the concerns of all interested parties, and to ensure that the security, stability and resiliency of the Internet are not compromised.


ICANN will soon begin a global communications program to tell the world about this dramatic change in Internet names and to raise awareness of the opportunities afforded by new gTLDs. The decision to launch the new gTLD program raised the curtain on ICANNs 41st public meeting, taking place in Singapore. It is just one of the issues that will dominate the weeklong meeting.


On Wednesday, the focus will turn to cyber security with the inauguration in Singapore of a specially built hardened facility, the first of three around the world that are helping to secure the domain names of all countries.


The Singapore meeting will continue through the week and conclude on Friday with a public meeting of the Board of Directors.

New Reviews on Sexual Reproduction and Inheritance Published in Biology Magazine

The review on Sexual Reproduction is comprehensive and covers the creation of new organisms by combining the genetic material of two parent organisms. Since the offspring receives a genotype compounded from two different histories, sexual reproduction introduces new gene combinations in a population. The review shows examples that adoption to environmental change is generally faster in sexual reproduction than in asexual reproduction. It, however, also shows that zones of exclusively asexual reproduction exist at environmental extremes where sexual reproduction is physiologically restricted. Such sexual isolation is considered a relatively unimportant secondary process, and it is suggested that the reproductive isolation observed between allopatric species is mostly an incidental outcome of sexual reproduction. The review also provides examples of plant species which are incapable of sexual reproduction but nevertheless dominate large areas. Examples include P. labradorica dominates large areas of coastal marsh in northern Quebec and Labrador through vigorous production of rhizomes. Sexual reproduction is a crucial process for dispersal of species to new sites but also for the local invasion process. Examples of such processes from Australia and New Mexico are presented. It is, however, shown that in such situations clonal (asexual) growth can be the predominant mode of reproduction.


The review on Inheritance covers the processes of genetic transmission of characteristics from parents to offspring. It includes details of studies on Graves' disease (GD). Genetic factors are important for predisposition to Graves' disease and several HLA alleles have been shown to predispose certain groups of people to the disease. The probably that an individual will be affected with GD can, thus, be predicted, based on sex, HLA genotype, and family history. The review includes studies of other diseases which can be at least in part inherited and include Gardner's syndrome, Hippel-Lindau Disease, neurofibromatosis, several types of cancer and pheochromocytoma-associated syndromes. Founded by two Army Rangers and Harvard Business School Alumni, Matthew Thompson and Blake Hall, the site has attracted over 17,000 users since its May 23, 2011 debut in Hampton Roads, Virginia.

Seasoned investment banker Christine Kieffer will join Bryant and McNabb as a partner in the Alpharetta Seed Capital Fund. Kieffer, also a member of the Alpharetta Accelerator Board of Advisors, currently serves as managing partner of Concept III International, a private equity business catalyst focused on the areas of high technology, commercial real estate, sports marketing and fine arts.
